The Altshuller Institute for TRIZ Studies

Stop learning to innovate through trial and error.

Learn TRIZ, the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving developed by Genrikh Altshuller, and solve problems more efficiently and intuitively. The Institute teaches it, certifies it, and gathers the people who use it.

What is TRIZ?

Inventiveness and creativity can be learned.

TRIZ (pronounced TREEZ) is the Russian acronym for the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. This proven algorithmic approach to solving technical problems began in 1946 when the engineer and scientist Genrikh Altshuller studied thousands of patents and noticed certain patterns.

From these patterns he discovered that the evolution of a technical system is not a random process, but is governed by objective laws. Those laws can be used to consciously develop a system along its path of technical evolution — and they can be taught, from school children to management consultants to PhD scientists.

Notes from the Executive Director

Welcome to the Altshuller Institute for TRIZ Studies

After nearly 30 years of existence, the Institute came to recognize that it had fallen into its own form of Paradigm Paralysis. We realized it was time not simply to preserve TRIZ, but to reinvent how we communicate, teach, and apply it in the modern world.

Today, we are re-energizing the Institute with a renewed mission — not only to promote TRIZ, but to help people successfully apply TRIZ to real-world challenges, business growth, education, innovation, and personal development. Our goal is to build a strong global community of TRIZ practitioners, educators, researchers, students, and business leaders who believe in the value of structured creativity and advanced problem-solving.

We hope you will join us as we begin this exciting new chapter. Let's make Altshuller proud on his 100th anniversary.

TRIZ works

Some fundamental factors that point to TRIZ as an effective and transformational methodology:

  • Patent base. The method comes from how real inventions were patented, not from one person's hunch.
  • New options. Teams get solution paths they would not reach by staying with the first idea.
  • Fits alongside. It works with the quality processes a company already uses, and it clears stalls in decisions.
  • Faster concepts. It produces usable solution concepts in less time than unstructured search.
  • Taught widely. People at every level of a company can learn it and use it on the job.

TRIZ in the university

Teaching TRIZ at Tulane Bioengineering

The Altshuller Institute supports the TRIZ course in the Bioengineering department at Tulane University, New Orleans. Students may sit for the Institute's Associate certification exam.

"Students examine their past projects with the training they received and implement TRIZ conflict resolution, and compare their previous designs to the multitude of innovative solutions they could generate with the TRIZ framework."Prof. Khaled Adjerid, Bioengineering Department Head, Tulane University
